Best Burn for the Buck

I just got the June 2007 issue of Money magazine and it has a short article on how many calories different activities burn per dollar. Running comes out way ahead of the other activities by burning 1100 calories per dollar. Second place is In-Line Skating which burns 625. They assume that the only money spent on running is $80 for shoes. You can check out the article on page 23.

What are some of the other costs of running? Here's a few things I've invested in:

Shorts & Shirts (wicking) - $40 set
Socks - $6/pair
Race entry fees $10+ = Most in my area are $20-$25 except for the marathon.
Body Glide - $8
Heart Rate Monitor - $60
GPS-enabled phone - free (raffle prize)
GPS tracking - $10/month (see the output at www.adventuresofrussellandgreg.com

Getting back into shape - priceless!

Let's see I haven't spent too much yet, but I have some things planned.

Running Hat - $13
Light to clamp on hat - $10
Races - Mostly 15-20 around here.
Socks - $9/pair

I'm planning on getting an mp3 player and an HRM soon.

The GPS tracking looks pretty cool. I might have to check into that if I ever get a phone with GPS.

I have to agree that getting back into shape is priceless. I'm not anywhere close to where I want to be but I'm a lot better off than I was just a couple months ago.
